SASHLA S.O.S Approach To Feeding

SPEAKERS' INFORMATION

Dr. Kay Toomey is a Pediatric Psychologist who has worked with children who don't eat for almost 20 years. She has developed the SOS Approach to Feeding as a family centered program for assessing and treating children with Feeding Problems. Dr. Toomey speaks nationally and internationally about her approach. She also acts as a consultant to Gerber Products. Dr. Toomey helped to form The Children's Hospital – Denver 's Pediatric Oral Feeding Clinic, as well as the Rose Medical Center 's Pediatric Feeding Center . Dr. Toomey co-chaired the Pediatric Therapy Services Department at Rose Medical Center prior to entering private practice. Dr. Toomey is currently the President of Toomey & Associates, Inc., as well as the Clinical Director of SOS Feeding Solutions @ STAR (Sensory

Erin Ross, Ph.D., CCC -SLP, Ph.D. received her Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center in May, 2007, and her Master's Degree in Speech and Language Pathology from California State University , Stanislaus in May, 1988. She completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the Section of Nutrition, Department of Pediatrics, School of Medicine at the University of Colorado , Denver . Dr. Ross works clinically in several NICU settings in the Denver metropolitan area in addition to her work with SOS Feeding Solutions. She has a specialized interest and expertise in evaluating and treating feeding and growth problems in the medically fragile infant and young child. Dr. Ross also speaks internationally on the subject of feeding and growth in the medically-fragile infant.

   
   
   

COURSE DESCRIPTION


T he Sequential Oral Sensory (S.O.S) Approach to Feeding workshop is a transdisciplinary program for assessing and treating children with feeding difficulties and weight/growth problems from birth to 18 years. It integrates posture, sensory, motor, behavioral/learning, medical, and nutritional factors to comprehensively evaluate and manage children with feeding/growth problems.

 


The 3 day basic workshop will take place on 11, 12 and 13 July 2010 . The advanced component of the course will occur on 14 July 2010 with a focus on helping children transition off G-tubes, helping feed the child on the autism spectrum, helping the severely impaired child eat better, and helping children with Gastroesophageal Reflux.

 

BASIC COURSE: OBJECTIVES


Participants attending will be able to:

  1. Identify oral, sensory, motor, cognitive and emotional developmental milestones key to feeding.
  2. Recognize and describe the major reasons why children won't eat, as based on learning theory principles.
  3. Identify physical, behavioral, motor, oral-motor, and sensory factors as a part of a Feeding Assessment.
  4. Apply behavioral and social learning principles, and systematic desensitization to feeding problems.
  5. Create and implement a S.O.S feeding program for toddlers and young children, in group and individual treatment formats.
  6. Identify adaptations to the S.O.S approach for special populations.

ADVANCED COURSE: OBJECTIVES

 

Feeding the Child on the Autism Spectrum

 

Participants will learn to:

  1. Describe the sensory problems of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) that make feeding especially difficult for them

  2. Describe at least 2 components of the Adaptation of the S.O.S Approach to Feeding for children with ASD

  3. List at least 3 hierarchy strategies for children with ASD

 

Transitioning Children off Gastrostomy Tubes

 

Participants will learn to:

  1. Describe at least 3 common problems with Nasogastric tubes
  2. Identify at least 2 reasons why children gag and retch with tube feedings
  3. Describe the optimal feeding environments and cues and for infants, toddlers and the older child
  4. Discuss the criteria to discontinue Gastrostomy tube (G-tube) feeding
  5. List possible methods for weaning a child from a G-tube.

 

Working with the Severely Impaired Child

 

Participants will learn to:

 

  1. Describe the role of cognitive development in working with children who are severely involved
  2. Demonstrate a gradiated hierarchy of supports and motor prompts in working with a child who is severely motorically involved
  3. Outline factors to consider in using feeding strategies when working with a visually impaired child

Children with Gastroesophageal Reflux

 

 

Participants will learn to:

  1. Define Gastroesophageal Reflux (GER)

  2. Describe at least 4 causes of GER

  3. List the major clinical signs of GER at each of the 5 ages from birth to 16 months
  4. 4. Identify at least 3 feeding treatment strategies for helping to manage GER
