Imagine not being able to hear

Hearing is one of the five human senses. It is the ability to perceive sound by detecting vibrations via the ear. In humans hearing is performed primarily by the auditory system: vibrations are detected by the ear and converted into nerve impulses that are perceived by the brain as sound.

What is an Audiologist?

An Audiologist is a highly trained professional who evaluates and treats hearing loss, auditory processing problems and balance disorders in children and adults.

An Audiologist has a minimum of a four year professional degree from a University.

All Audiologists must be registered with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

You can find Audiologists in many different settings including schools, private practice, hospitals as well as universities.

What do Audiologists do?

Audiologists provide the following services:

  • Provide diagnostic hearing testing in order to diagnose a hearing loss.
  • Diagnose different types of hearing loss, namely:
    • A conductive hearing loss results when something in the middle-ear interferes with the transmission of the sound to the inner ear (such as ear infections)
    • A sensorineural hearing loss affects the inner ear and neural pathway.
  • Refer to an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist or a medical practitioner if the client requires medical attention.
  • Supply, fit and provide training in the use of hearing instruments such as conventional hearing aids, cochlear implants and bone-anchored hearing aids as well as assistive listening devices.
  • Provide audiological assessment and therapy for Central Auditory Processing Disorders.

Who can Audiologists treat?

  • Children with Otitis Media (middle ear infection) When children suffer from chronic middle ear infection their hearing will most likely fluctuate causing poor listening skills and delayed speech and language development. Audiologists perform regular hearing assessments to monitor the hearing of these children and make referrals to ENT specialists for treatment.
  • People who suffer from Balance Problems. An Audiologist is able to determine whether these problems might be c aused by problems of the inner ear.
  • People who are exposed to excessive Noise. An audiologist can monitor hearing and provide custom made hearing protection for people who work or participate in leisure activities in noisy environments.
  • People who experience Tinnitus (ringing in the ears). An audiologist can offer support, treatment options or referrals for this condition.
  • People with Central Auditory Processing Disorders. An audiologist can assist school-aged children who exhibit listening problems in class.

What should I expect at the first appointment?

Hearing tests differ depending on the age of the client. The audiologist uses special equipment in a sound-treated room to test hearing. Some of the tests require a response when the sound is heard. Others can be carried out whilst lying quietly or even sleeping.

It is never too early to have your child’s hearing tested!

What should I ask the Audiologist?

There are some questions you may want to ask the Audiologist before, during and after the evaluation:
  • Is the hearing loss temporary or permanent?
  • What are the possible causes of the hearing loss?
  • How will this type/degree or hearing loss impact my child’s speech and language development / my daily life?
  • How will my child’s education be affected? What are my options for school placement?
  • What type of amplification do you suggest and why?

How do I find an Audiologist?

To find a registered Audiologist in your area, contact SASLHA (South African Speech-Language-Hearing Association):

Imagine not being able to communicate

Communication is a complex aspect of human behaviour. A child or adult with a communication disorder may encounter many obstacles to learning, communicating and employment. Speech and Language therapy thus forms an integral part of education and rehabilitation.

What is a Speech-Language Therapist?

A Speech-Language Therapist is a highly trained professional who evaluates and treats children and adults who have difficulty communicating with others as well as those who have difficulty sucking, chewing or swallowing food or liquids.

A Speech-Language Therapist has a minimum of a four year professional degree from a University.

All Speech-Language Therapists must be registered with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

You can find Speech-Language Therapists in many different settings including schools, private practice, hospitals, rehabilitation centres as well as universities.

Who do Speech-Language Therapists treat?

The following is a list of people who have specific speech and language disorders who would require the services of a Speech-Language Therapist:

Speech Disorders
  • People who have a problem with the way they pronounce speech sounds (Articulation)
  • People who have difficulty developing the speech patterns we use to communicate (Phonology)
  • People who have difficulty planning and co-ordinating the movements needed to make speech sounds (Apraxia of Speech)
  • People who stutter.
  • People who have voice problems such as hoarseness

Language Disorders
  • People who have difficulty understanding language (receptive language difficulties)
  • People who have difficulty using language (expressive language difficulties)
  • People who have difficulty with social communication, or the way we speak to each other and why we speak to each other (Pragmatic language) Other Disorders
