Wits Speech Pathology and Audiology at the University of the Witwatersrand celebrated its 70th birthday in 2006. The discipline is the oldest established university facility in the speech-language pathology and audiology in the country. Speech Pathology and Audiology concern the processes and disorders of human communication. Speech Pathologists and Audiologists complete courses which include the study of normal hearing, speech, and language development, speech acoustics, speech physiology and perception, the nature of language, speech and hearing disorders in children and adults, social and cultural aspects of communication disorders, and the clinical processes involved in identification, prevention, and management of those disorders.
Speech Pathology and Audiology at Wits includes
- Training Speech Pathologists and Audiologists at the undergraduate level.
- Providing postgraduate studies at the Master's level in either Speech Pathology or Audiology. Options include coursework or clinical work (both of these options include a research component), or pure research by dissertation. Advanced hearing science
- PhD supervision.
- Ongoing research in communication science and on communication pathologies.
- Provision of speech-language and hearing therapy to members of the public who experience communication difficulties, and supoprt for their families.
- Adherence to policies of community engagement and community work.
