"The cornerstone of any profession is the ongoing pursuit of knowledge and
the development of the accompanying clinical skills that are necessary for
optimal client care. CPD refers to the education and training that is directly
related to the speech, language and hearing professions as they are practiced
beyond entry into clinical practice. It encompasses one or more of the areas
within the scope of practice of the professions as these are practiced within
institutions or communities, including the management thereof. CPD is a means of
ensuring that professional services to clients are of a high standard being
relevant, appropriate and up to date. It offers professionals opportunities to
move from their present level of practice to a higher level through planned
professional growth. CPD therefore refers to any activity where an individual
acquires knowledge and skills that are beyond the entry level requirement for
newly graduated practitioners." (HPCSA - Professional Board for Speech,
Language & Hearing Professions - CPD Guideline - December 2002)
CPD is a prerequisite for annual re-registration and entitlement to practice
a profession and was officially put in place on 1 April 2003
